TOM SHOVAL PREMIO AL FILM PKF 2026

Il premio del PKF va quest’anno a Tom Shoval, giovane regista israeliano il cui stile visivo e le cui capacità di narrazione hanno ricevuto entusiastiche recensioni e prestigiosi premi sia per il cinema che per la televisione. Tra le sue opere si ricordano il film Youth 2013, due premi oscar Alejandro Inarritu (Birdman), “Shake your cares away” con Bernice Bejo nel 2021, Echo of your vocie (serie TV), il cortometraggio Katya’s Hand nel 2023. Con il film “Letter to David” che sarà presentato nel corso del Festival, ha partecipato alla Berlinale e vinto il premio Israeliano Ophir per il miglior documentario. Tom Shoval nel 2013 scritturò David Cunio e suo fratello nel film Youth, nei panni di due adolescenti che rapiscono una ricca compagna di classe per chiedere i soldi necessari a ripagare i debiti di famiglia. Durante l’attacco del 7 ottobre David, sua moglie Sharon e le loro figlie gemelle sono stati rapiti dai terroristi di Hamas. Tutti i membri della famiglia sono stati rilasciati nel novembre 2023 tranne David e il suo fratellino Ariel, che sono rimasti ancora a lungo ostaggi a Gaza. È stato così che Shoval ha deciso di girare il documentario A Letter to David, per ricordare al pubblico che ‘ogni ostaggio è una persona con una vita ancora da vivere, un concetto che non dovrebbe essere mai dimenticato’. Il film, candidato al Premio Ophir 2025 come Miglior Documentario, è stato presentato in anteprima mondiale all’ultima edizione del Festival Internazionale del Cinema di Berlino. Da allora ha ricevuto recensioni entusiaste da parte del pubblico e della critica in tutto il mondo, compresi gli spettatori di martedì a Tel Aviv.

The PKF Film award this year goes to Tom Shoval’s movie “Letter to David”. Tom Shoval’s distinct visual style and storytelling abilities have won rave reviews and prestigious awards in both film and TV. His work includes, among others; YOUTH 2013, two-time Academy Award winning director Alejandro Inarritu (Birdman) executive produced “Shake your Cares Away” starring Bernice Bejo 2021, Echo of your Voice (TV- SERIES) 2021, Katya’s Hand 2023 (Short film) He wrote Jake Paltrow’s June Zero 2022 and Academy Award nominated short Aya 2015 which he co- wrote. His film A Letter to David 2025 has premiered in Berlinale and won the Israeli OPHIR award for best Documentary. His latest Feature Life Without Credit 2025 is about to be released during the year. In 2013, Tom Shoval cast David Cunio and his brother in the film Youth, playing two teenagers who kidnap a wealthy classmate to demand the money needed to pay off their family debts. During the attack on October 7, David, his wife Sharon, and their twin daughters were kidnapped by Hamas terrorists. All family members were released in November 2023 except for David and his little brother Ariel, who remained hostages in Gaza for a long time. It was in this way that Shoval decided to make the documentary A Letter to David, to remind the audience that ‘every hostage is a person with a life still to live, a concept that should never be forgotten’. The film, nominated for the 2025 Ophir Award for Best Documentary, had its world premiere at the latest edition of the Berlin International Film Festival. Since then, it has received enthusiastic reviews from audiences and critics around the world, including Tuesday’s viewers in Tel Aviv.
